In spite of having many number drugs there is the special treatment for psychosis and depression. The first antipsychotic compound which is used for the treatment of the symptoms of schizopherenia which is known by its trade names like Largactil or Thorazine in 1953. The effect of the drug went beyond the sedation with the patient who shows great improvements in thinking and emotional behavior and moreover hundred millions of patients were treated and cured. From chlorpromazine many other compound are developed namely phenothiazines. This drug have revolutionary role in transforming the mental institutions from purely custodial role.

The interest for the anti-psychotic medications was pointed high in the late 1960s but the image of the drugs came in existence in mid 1970s. The first generation of antipsychotic drugs is now called as typical antipsychotic.

In 1990 many typical antipsychotic drugs were marketed and they are believed to have lower incidence of terdive dyskinesia and extrapyramidal side effects than the first generation typical antipsychotic. They are believed to be a better treatment for the negative symptoms of schizophrenia. These drugs are marketed under the name Abilify, Risperdal among others.

However, the limited existing information of brain chemistry means that even the more modern compounds cause a range of extrapyramidal side-effects. While effective at controlling acute symptoms, antipsychotic drugs are of less value in treating chronic symptoms.
